The Minister of the Union for the Development of Human Resources, Ramesh Pokhriyal, and the Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, launched the Fit India school classification system on December 4, 2019.
The Fit India program is a unique initiative of the central government to encourage Indians to lead a healthier life and understand the importance of staying fit through physical activity. Fit India School’s rating system will improve the visibility of schools across the country.
Procedure for schools to obtain Fit India Star Rating
There is a set of criteria that each school must meet to be eligible for the 3 and 5 star qualifications of Fit India School. Some of the requirements are:
All teachers in the school must devote at least 60 minutes to the exercise.
The school must have at least two teachers trained in two sports.
Each student must practice two sports, one of which must be a local / traditional game.
Schools must apply online through the official government website to obtain the grade.
Once the Fit India mission has verified the school’s application, it issues an online certificate and a congratulatory letter. These details would also be printed and sent to school by mail.
Fit India should be included in the Prime Minister’s awards.

These are the additional parameters that must be met for a school to receive a 3-star rating in the Fit India School program:
All teachers in the school must spend at least 60 minutes a day on physical activities.
The school must have at least two trained instructors specialized in physical education. Each of these instructors must be qualified to teach at least two sports.
The school must have the necessary facilities for students to practice four sports. This also includes two outdoor sports.
Each student at school must practice two sports. One of these should be a traditional game.
How can a school receive a 5-star rating under the Fit India program?
Additional parameters (beyond the 3-star qualification requirements) that a school must meet to receive a 5-star rating from Fit India School are:
The school must organize monthly sports competitions for students. You must also participate in sports competitions between schools and celebrate “Sports Day” every year.
All school instructors must be trained in physical education.
The school must have at least two sports teachers.
The institution must adhere to a structured curriculum for physical education, according to the NCERT or the school board.
The school must organize an evaluation of the physical condition of all students each year.
The institution must allow neighboring communities to use their playground after school. Management may charge security or maintenance fees in this regard.
